Hello and welcome to my site! My name is Jo and I am a freelance writer based in Cornwall. I first moved to this quirky county when I took a job as a Lecturer in Geography. For almost 20-years I studied the climate crisis, coding huge models to predict the end of the world. It took its toll and in 2025, burnt out and miserable, I took voluntary redundancy and walked away from the career I thought I’d have forever. With no plan, for perhaps the first time in my life, I had to figure out once more what I wanted to do when I grew up. All the way back in 2020, depressed in lock-down, I had started a novel. At first, just to get the demons out of my head and onto a page, but my main character stayed with me, nagging. I joined a writing group, started to get more pages down and finally scraped together my first draft a year after quitting academia. This was my debut novel //System (the backslashes mean a comment in computer code). I took a free community class on journalism, wrote some short stories, attended literary festivals, befriended other creatives and came to the scary conclusion that I wanted to be a writer. One free website design course later and the dystopian journalist was born.
